What it costs. In plain English.
If the accident was not your fault, you pay £0 upfront and no excess. The charges are claimed from the at-fault driver's insurer. If you are paying yourself, every rate is a starting figure confirmed in writing before you commit.

Nothing deducted without your agreement
Nothing comes out of your settlement without your written say-so. We take no payment for injury referrals.
You could be asked to pay if
The cases where the cost can come back to you
We would rather you read this now than find it later.
- The accident is found to be your fault, or partly your fault.
- The account you gave us was untrue or inaccurate, and the claim fails because of it.
- You do not co-operate: no response to reasonable requests, no evidence, or an inspection refused.
- You keep the car longer than reasonably needed, or after we ask for it back.
- You breach the hire agreement, for example an unauthorised driver or unlawful use.
- You cancel or end the hire outside the agreement after the car has been delivered.
How we handle it if one of these happens
We write to you setting out what has happened, the amount involved and why, and give you a reasonable time to respond before anything is due. We do not add surprise fees, and we do not pursue charges for a period the at-fault insurer has already accepted.
Cancelling before delivery costs nothing. If you sign online or away from our office you also have 14 days to cancel the agreement; if the car has already been delivered in that time, you may have to pay for the hire provided up to the point you cancel.
Your credit hire agreement and our terms, sections 5 and 8, set out the full wording and prevail if anything here differs. Your handler explains it before you sign.
Insurer vs us
Claim on your own policy, or claim from theirs? It's not close.
After a non-fault accident you have two routes. One costs you your excess and puts a claim on your record. The other doesn't.
Route A
Through your own insurer
Your excess
You pay it first — usually £250 to £1,000 — and try to get it back later.
Your no-claims bonus
A claim goes on your own policy. Your bonus can be affected until fault is settled.
Claim on your policy
Yes — a claim is opened against you and stays on your record.
Replacement car
Whatever your policy allows — often a small hatchback, sometimes nothing.
If you drive for Uber, Bolt or FREENOW
Standard courtesy cars aren't PCO-licensed. You can't work.
Who chases the at-fault insurer
You do — on hold, between jobs, for weeks.
Route B
Not on your recordWith Courtesy Cars UK
Your excess
Nothing to pay. We claim from the at-fault driver's insurer, not you.
Your no-claims bonus
No claim on your policy, so your no-claims bonus isn't touched.
Claim on your policy
No. It's not on your record — the at-fault insurer carries it.
Replacement car
Like-for-like. TfL-plated if you drive PCO, so it matches what you lost.
If you drive for Uber, Bolt or FREENOW
TfL-licensed replacement so you keep earning while your car is fixed.
Who chases the at-fault insurer
We do. Every call and letter is logged in your portal.
You should still tell your own insurer the accident happened — that's a notification, not a claim. Under credit hire we seek to recover charges from the at-fault party's insurer. Recovery is not guaranteed and you may be liable under your agreement if the claim is unsuccessful or you are found to be at fault. How we are paid.

£0 upfront and no excess. The car, recovery, storage and repair are provided on credit and the charges are claimed from the at-fault driver's insurer. Any fee for an extra service you ask us for is agreed in writing before you commit.
It is £0 upfront and, in the ordinary case, the at-fault insurer pays. Recovery is not certain. Under the agreement you remain responsible for the hire charges, and in practice we only ask you to pay in the situations listed on this page: fault, an untrue account, no co-operation, keeping the car too long, a breach of the agreement, or cancelling outside it. We tell you this in writing before you sign.
Yes. If a claim starts to look at risk we tell you while there is still time to act. If a charge does become yours we write to you first with the amount, the reason and a reasonable time to respond. Nothing is taken without that letter.
Nothing is deducted from your settlement without your written agreement. Hire, recovery, storage and repair charges are claimed from the at-fault insurer, not from your compensation.
We can still help on a self-pay basis: replacement cars from £49 a day, PCO cars from £35 a day, motorcycle hire from £25 a day, storage from £15 a day and recovery from £75. Every figure, including any deposit and damage excess, is confirmed in writing before you commit.
If liability ends up shared, the at-fault insurer may only pay part of the charges. We tell you as soon as a split looks likely, and what it would mean for you, so you can decide whether to keep the car. See our terms, section 5.
For as long as you reasonably need it: while yours is repaired, or until a total loss is settled. We monitor the repair and the insurer so the hire period stays reasonable.
